New trial date set in Hancock Street shooting case

A new trial date has been set at the end of August for Dethaniel Thompson, the man accused of shooting Leandre Watkins in the leg on Hancock Street in 2019.

He appeared in Christian Circuit Court Thursday virtually with defense attorney Michael Thompson, who informed the court that trial was delayed by the Kentucky Supreme Court so a new date was needed—Circuit Judge John Atkins set it for August 30 and 31.

Dethaniel Thompson is facing charges of first-degree assault, three counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, tampering with physical evidence, fourth-degree assault, unlawful imprisonment and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.  He is alleged to have shot Watkins in the right leg in March of 2019, sending Watkins to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

He also allegedly fired bullets into three vehicle at the scene before fleeing.  Some of his charges stem from a separate incident that occurred earlier in 2019 when he allegedly held his girlfriend at gunpoint and fired three gunshots into the floor after accusing her of cheating.
