YMCA hands out awards, celebrates volunteers at annual meeting

The YMCA of Hopkinsville held their annual meeting virtually Thursday and gave several recognitions and awards to volunteers.

Mack Major, the outgoing Chief Volunteer Officer, says that they were of course impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but due to hard work and cost cutting by the staff, they were able to keep expenses down by 16 percent while grant funding increased revenue.

He says the YMCA’s focus for 2021 will be on increasing membership and community service and outreach.

YMCA CEO Sheryl Ellis says without the dedicated efforts of the staff and the many volunteers they depend on, 2020 might have been a different outcome for the initiative.

The gavel was passed to incoming CVO Marvin Barnes, who will head up the board of directors during 2021.  Several awards were handed out at the meeting, including the Coach of the Year Award to Kristin Hernandez, the Volunteer of the Year Award to Mike Sowell and Dawson McDonald received the Role Model of the Year Award. The Gary Latham Award was presented to Darrell Gustafson.
