Rep. Bechler doesn’t expect compromise with governor on emergency powers

The Kentucky General Assembly has the votes to override Governor Andy Beshear’s vetoes of legislation limiting his powers during a state of an emergency and at least one local lawmaker isn’t expecting there to be a compromise with the governor for a new version of the bill.

Representative Lynn Bechler of Marion says finding a compromise between what powers Governor Beshear believes he should have to mitigate the pandemic and how much input Republican legislators believe they should have in the process will be very difficult.

If there were to be a compromise to change any of the several bills on emergency powers that were approved in the session’s first eight days, the legislature would have to craft completely new legislation.

For his part, Bechler would have preferred bills with more restrictions on a governor’s emergency powers.

Bechler represents a portion of Christian and all of Caldwell, Crittenden and Livingston counties.
