Lawmakers Introduce Bill To Honor Capitol Police Officer, Former 101st Soldier After Riot

A bipartisan group of lawmakers is introducing a bill awarding the Congressional Gold Medal to a Capitol Police officer who is also a former member of Fort Campbell’s 101st Airborne Division.

Nancy Mace of South Carolina, Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri and Charlie Crist of Florida are leading the effort to honor Officer Eugene Goodman.  He’s seen on video diverting the attention of rioters last week and prompting them to chase him, leading them away from the Senate chamber.  Senators, staff members and some reporters were sheltering inside the Senate chamber at the time.

Goodman led the mob to a spot where additional officers had gathered.

The 101st Airborne Division recognized Officer Goodman on social media, tweeting “We see you, Eugene.”
