Budget to be focus of General Assembly’s second week

It’s unusual for the Kentucky General Assembly to meet for a second consecutive week to begin a short session, but that’s exactly what legislators will do with the need to approve a one-year budget on top of mind.

Representative Walker Thomas says they will convene Monday through Wednesday to move quickly on a spending plan and get it to a conference committee of House and Senate leaders during the break.

Representative Myron Dossett likes some of what he sees in Governor Andy Beshear’s budget, but says lawmakers must make the final plan based on reoccurring revenues and not rely on one-time CARES Act funding.

Senator Whitney Westerfield says it’s his desire to get the budget to the governor’s desk as quickly as possible in February and then use the remaining time to focus on other priorities.

The three days this week and Saturday of last week being taken from the back end of the session, as lawmakers can only be in session for 30 days on an odd-numbered year.
