Kentucky has second-highest total of new COVID cases

Kentucky had its second-highest single-day total of new coronavirus cases Thursday.

The 4,911 new cases means the commonwealth had over 10,000 in a two-day span.

Governor Andy Beshear also reported 37 more deaths, bringing the state’s death toll to 2,843.

The positivity rate is up to 11.9 percent, 1,744 Kentuckians are hospitalized, 424 are in the ICU and 217 are on a ventilator.

Governor Beshear says, “We are in a dangerous place. It is now clear that we are seeing an escalation related to holiday gatherings. This is not the time to make it harder to react to this virus when it may be surging again.”

Tennessee also had a bleak report, noting 9,000 new cases and 111 more deaths. At least 3,351 Tennesseans are in a hospital and the positivity rate is a tick below 20 percent.
