Everyone bid farewell to 2020 Friday, and the National Weather Service looked back on the weather that occurred during the year while looking forward to what comes next.
Warning Coordination Meteorologist Rick Shanklin appeared on WHOP recently and says while the region certainly had its brushes with severe weather, 2020 overall was pretty average in the way of weather events.
Something he was excited about was the recent upgrade to weather radars located between Pembroke and Trenton that serves Fort Campbell—he says that will really help give accurate information going forward into 2021.
As we head into the New Year, Shanklin says the area is in a La Nina pattern, which shows above normal temperatures and above normal precipitation.
The area was impacted by tornadic storms in January of 2020, which caused damage to the Senior Citizens Center on West Seventh Street, Ruff Park, Christian County High School and more locations.
