Wesley “Tag” Mabry, WWII veteran and former councilman, dies

The community is mourning the loss of World War II veteran and former city councilman, Wesley “Tag” Mabry.

According to an obituary from Lamb Funeral Home, a private family burial will be held at Green Hill Memorial Gardens and celebration of life services will be held at a later date. Mabry passed away at 97 years of age at Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro, Tennessee following what is described as a short illness.

Mabry was the keynote speaker of a Memorial Day service in 2012, where he called America the greatest, most free nation in the world, thanks to the sacrifices of those who came before.

He spoke very fondly of Hopkinsville and those who live here, saying that when the time comes all we will have are memories–so they should be cherished.

Mabry was born on June 19, 1923—served in World War II and was a staff accountant for Moss, Hestley, and Frankle Tobacco Company, a grocery store owner and retired from the Internal Revenue Service after 30 years of service.

He served on the Hopkinsville City Council for ten years, serving as Mayor Pro-Tem and the chairman of the Audit and Finance Committee numerous times. He also was a charter member of the VFW Post 1913. Expressions of sympathy can be made to Veterans of Foreign War Post 1913 or to the Edgewood Baptist Church Mission Fund.
