Although the upcoming session of the Kentucky General Assembly will be dominated by budget and COVID-19, the Senate Judiciary Committee Co-Chair says the assembly will be busier than ever looking at what else comes forward.
Senator Whitney Westerfield of Christian County is once again heading up the Judiciary Committee and says that committee will have many things brought before them. One of the main things will be handling COVID-19 liability for schools and businesses—he says if those places are doing everything they can to meet regulations, they should be protected.
He says frivolous lawsuits could cripple already stressed agencies, and so he hopes to see some movement on that this session.
Westerfield says he also fully expects to see legislation concerning no-knock warrants—which became the focus of the state earlier this year during the case of the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor—come before the committee.
He says the 30-day session would have been busy on a normal year, but now with the pandemic and budget thrown in—which requires a two thirds majority vote to pass— along with addressing the executive emergency powers of the governor, it’s shaping up to be a pretty hectic assembly.
