Fort Campbell paused Saturday morning to remember the 248 soldiers and eight crew members who were killed December 12, 1985 in a plane crash near Gander, Newfoundland.
It was the deadliest day in the 101st Airborne Division’s history and 2nd Brigade Combat Team Commander, Col. Michael Kovacevic noted Saturday morning that those Screaming Eagles were on their way home from a successful peacekeeping mission in the Sinai Peninsula.
Many of the men and women on hand Saturday were not alive when the crash happened, but Col. Kovacevic said they can keep the memories of those lost alive by telling their story.
It was the second time the remembrance ceremony was held at the relatively new Gander Memorial on Fort Campbell.
