Hopkinsville may have had to call off several Christmas time regular festivities this year, but that didn’t stop Parks and Recreation from flipping the switch for the tree lighting Friday night, with a special light switch flipper.
It was a much smaller crowd than past years, due to pandemic restrictions, but the lighting was aired live on Facebook for all to enjoy. The light switch was flipped by seven-year old Sylas Luxmore, who was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year and was very ill during Christmas last year—this year he’s feeling better and ready to enjoy his favorite holiday.
Superintendent Tab Brockman read the nomination letter from Sylas’ mother, Casey Carroll, who says putting up the Christmas tree is one of Sylas’ favorite part of Christmas—and he shows every day that hope and spirit is still very much alive in him and all of us.
Sylas told the crowd, both in-person and virtual, that he was so glad to do this and be here, and he loves Christmas very much.
He wished everyone a merry Christmas and says he’s ready to see what the next year brings.
The crowd counted down from ten and cheered as Sylas flipped the switch, setting the community tree alight in downtown Hopkinsville, and bringing in Christmas in style.
