Heritage Christian Academy intends to reopen its Hopkinsville campus Monday.
HCA Healthy at School Officer Stephanie Boyd said the plan as of Thursday afternoon was for all grades to be back at the Hopkinsville campus Monday.
The reopening would go against Governor Andy Beshear’s mandate against in-person instruction in counties that are red on the state incidence rate map.
The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals recently upheld Governor Beshear’s mandate, saying his order to help curb the spread of coronavirus did not target religious freedoms because it applied to all K-12 schools, private and public.
Attorney General Daniel Cameron is taking Danville Christian Academy’s case against the governor’s order to the U.S. Supreme Court, asking them to consider the case and arguing it does target religious freedom because some other indoor activities are allowed in the Commonwealth.
Boyd says HCA’s plan now is to return to school Monday and maintain in-person learning until the Supreme Court potentially makes a decision on the case. It’s still not certain the nation’s highest court will decide to hear the case at all and could let the 6th Circuit ruling stand.
