After 19 years of service to the community, Hopkinsville Fire Department Captain Michael Pendelton went home from his final shift Thanksgiving morning as he enters retirement.

He didn’t plan for his fire department career to end on Thanksgiving, but Pendelton says it was appropriate in many ways that it did.

The immediate task at hand will include him being a stay-at-home father and home school teacher to his daughter.

Firefighters don’t always get the holidays off and Pendleton says it will be the first time in two decades he will be home for all of them.

He’s served as public information officer for the fire department since former PIO Steve Futrell was promoted to chief and has spent the last few years overseeing the EMS portion of the department.
