Sen. Westerfield re-elected, Marsy’s Law amendment succeeds

Third district State Senator Whitney Westerfield defeated Libertarian Amanda Billings to earn another term in the state legislature.

Westerfield defeated Billings with 78 percent of the vote to Billings’ 21 percent. Westerfield says he’s grateful to go back, as he has things he still wants to accomplish.  He says things will be very different in this upcoming session, with a COVID-19 budget to look forward to, along with other priorities.

Constitutional amendment one—otherwise known as Marsy’s Law—creating a victim’s Bill of Rights in Kentucky, passed for a second time.  Westerfield sponsored that bill and says it’s been long overdue and he’s thrilled to see it pass.

Marsy’s Law passed once before, but was thrown out by the Kentucky Supreme Court due to how it was written on the ballot for citizens to vote on.  The language of the amendment was written on the ballot in its entirety this time around.

Constitutional amendment two, which would have increased the terms for District Judges and Commonwealths’ Attorneys to eight years and would have increased the required experience to be a District Judge to eight years, failed on the ballot.
