Lawyers spar over evidence in shooting case

Trial is scheduled next week for the man accused of shooting Derrell Bateman in February in Hopkinsville, but his attorney and the Commonwealth are in disagreement over medical records.

Travis Mayes allegedly shot Bateman in the abdomen at the intersection of East Second Street and South Vine Street in February of this year.

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Bolen says medical records from Vanderbilt on Bateman are accessible, but public defender Doug Moore—who appeared via zoom while on vacation—disagrees.

Judge Atkins scheduled another hearing for Monday morning at 8 when Moore is back in town for further arguments about the records.

Mayes remains lodged in the Christian County Jail for first-degree assault.
