EDC gives update on local industry interest, unemployment

The South West Kentucky Economic Development Council Board of Directors heard an update at what is taking place with the EDC at Monday’s regularly scheduled meeting.

Executive Director Carter Hendricks says a ground breaking for the new spec building has been delayed from its original date set in December, as they wait for bids to come back in—he says that building will be only one of many things that could attract industries to the region.

He says they have been seeing a rise in activity and interested parties, but he was unable to go into too much detail due to confidentiality.

The region recently underwent a Tennessee Valley Authority livability assessment and received a nine out of 10 score, with 10 being the best.

Christian County maintains an unemployment rate of 8.5 percent, with Todd County 5.5 percent and Trigg County at 7.2 percent unemployment—the regional average was around 7.1 percent.

Several local industries recently received Go Green Sustainable Community Awards for 2020, including Brazeway, Commonwealth Agri-Energy, Novelis, Pregis, Riken Elastomers and the Walmart Distribution Center.
