HFD puts out information about fire prevention and safety

Friday is National Fire Prevention Day and the Hopkinsville Fire Department is reminding residents to keep those smoke detector batteries changed and to be cautious with space heaters.

Appearing on WHOP Friday morning was HFD Captain Michael Pendleton and Inspector Chad Sivils, and they say there’s many things you can do that can either prevent a fire or help you survive one.  As things get cooler outside, people will start pulling out heaters once more—Sivils says make sure there’s nothing that can catch fire within several feet of those heaters, including clothes, boxes, curtains, blankets and numerous other things.

He also urges people to change those smoke detector batteries every year, and today is a good day to do it.

Captain Pendleton says more information is coming out that sleeping with your bedroom door shut can help save your life in the event of a house fire.

He says a shut door does a lot to keep out deadly heat and smoke, and allow time for you to escape from a window or call for help if you are unable to do that.

The fire department and EMS continue to respond to those in need during the midst of the pandemic, but things have changed some in the sense they frequently and thoroughly decontaminate all equipment, ask for COVID-19 information while responding and more.
