Young children who live in the city limits of Elkton can now receive an age-appropriate book for free in the mail each month after Elkton City Council approved funding for a local Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
Elkton City Clerk Laura Brock is the registration coordinator and says the idea came about from Councilman Michael Case during discussions about Elkton’s bicentennial celebration.
She says families with children between the ages of birth and five can already go to the City of Elkton website and learn about the Imagination Library and register.
She says there’s already enthusiasm in the community for the program.
Mayor Arthur Green says, “By participating in the Imagination Library, we are providing books for the children of Elkton to explore the world from their home. Reading is the key to learning and developing that great imagination. I am glad the Elkton City Council has budgeted for this program to support the education of the children located in Elkton.”
Brock says the program is expected to cost the city about $3,500 annually by year five.
