Today we feature the recent Ward 6 Hopkinsville City Council debate hosted by the League of Women Voters.
Local realtor and Republican Travis Martin was appointed to council after Wendell Lynch ascended to the mayor’s seat and he’s opposed by Democrat Paula Knight, who is a businesswoman and former member of council.
Both candidates say the city must support the Salvation Army in its efforts to address homelessness and both want to see programming to make homeless individuals employable.
Asked about challenges facing the city, Knight cited crime and budgeting issues that will likely require spending cuts.
Martin also cited spending by the city as an issue and wants to find ways to support small businesses struggling in the pandemic.
Both candidates say they support the efforts of Inner City REZ, but Knight says their $500,000 annual allotment may need to be cut if revenues remain down.
