Candidates for CCSB District 1 meet in debate

The candidates running in the race for the Christian County School Board seat in District 1 met in debate recently at a League of Women Voter’s forum.

Incumbent Jeff Moore is facing off against challenge John Bruce, and they discussed many topics during the debate, including COVID-19 and facility needs to the school system.  Moore says he voted for students to return to school in-person, and he believes they can stay healthy while still getting the education they need.

Bruce agreed, saying he likes the option of the Virtual Learning Academy for those who have concerns, while getting most students back in school.

On the subject of facility needs, Bruce says he will visit each school building, and then push for the public to be well informed on what each facility needs going forward.

Moore says they’ll have to find a way to afford any renovations or replacements that are needed and he believes Superintendent Chris Bentzel is well equipped to find a way.

When it comes to the possibility of raising the rate on property tax revenue that the school board has the option of taking each year, Moore says he recently voted against raising it but has in the past when he felt it was necessary.  Bruce says he would closely examine how money is currently being budgeted to see if money could be saved there, but how he would vote depends on the circumstances at that time.

A debate was also scheduled for the District 2 race between Nichole Eastman and Tiffany Mumford Brame, but Eastman was unable to attend.  After his opponent withdrew from the race recently, Mike Walker is the only person running for the District 4 seat.
