Todd Fiscal Court keeps tax rate same, hears update on jail, upcoming election

Todd Fiscal Court approved final reading of an ordinance Friday keeping the property tax rates the same as last year and heard reports on the jail and upcoming election.

The rate on real property will remain 9.9 cents per $100 of assessed value following unanimous approval by magistrates.

Todd County Jailer Jeff Penick told court about a close call where several state inmates that had been slated to be transferred to the jail in Elkton tested positive during a quarantine period before transport.

Penick says jails across Kentucky are losing revenue with fewer state inmates to house available after many non-violent offenders were released early because of the pandemic and he doesn’t expect the numbers to go back up.

Penick says he’s reduced the hours of three full-time employees to cut costs.

County Clerk Cindy O’Bryan reminded residents that October 5 is the deadline to register to vote in the general election, you can request an absentee ballot through October 9 and early voting begins at the Todd County Courthouse on Tuesday, October 13.

Todd Fiscal Court went into closed session at the end of the meeting, but did not take any action.
