COTW moves forward with assisting small businesses with CARES funds

The Hopkinsville City Council Committee of the Whole went forward with CARES Act funding to help local small businesses at a special-called meeting Tuesday night and formed a committee to discuss what to do with the rest of the $2.3 million.

Councilman Travis Martin noted disagreement he’s heard in the community with how some of the funds were proposed to be spent and offered up a committee consisting of himself and council members Philip Brooks, Jason Bell, Tom Johnson and Terry Parker.

Councilmember Amy Craig didn’t oppose the committee, but said she wanted to see aid begin soon for small businesses adversely affected by the pandemic.

She says there’s probably some agreement for removing one item from the CARES Act spending plan—paving a gravel overflow parking lot at the Bruce Convention Center.

Following a motion by Councilman Parker, the committee sent a proposal to City Council to go forward with using $335,000 to begin a small businesses assistance program while the new committee wrestles with what to do with the remaining $2 million.
