The Christian County Public Schools System held a virtual community forum Thursday afternoon to discuss the reopening plans for the upcoming school year.
Students in Christian County had the option of returning to traditional in-person learning or through the Virtual Learning Academy—but due to a recommendation set down by Governor Andy Beshear, the school year will start with Non-Traditional Instruction on August 27. The hope is in-person school will start on September 28.
Director of Instruction Jessica Addison gave an overview on how NTI this year will be very different from previous NTI models, saying students will have access to their teachers and other resources.
She says families utilizing the learning academy will be able to set their own, flexible schedules that work for them and their students.
Millbrooke Interim Principal Renikka Owen says the start of school will have a phased launch, with the first few weeks getting students used to getting online and learning the system they will be using.
District Technology Coordinator Jason Wilson says they are still waiting to receive 3,500 new Chromebooks for students to use, while they’re going to start handing out existing Chromebooks to families next week. He says students will be able to use the hot spots to download their work and then work on it offline at home.
Children will be required to check in each day—middle and high school students once per course—to be counted for attendance. Parents and guardians are urged to reach out to their child’s school to discuss barriers and struggles for them and how they can work through them.
