Local COVID-19 testing site to remain open into next month

Christian County’s COVID-19 positivity rate remains troubling and testing will continue at Tie Breaker Park into next month and the Christian County Health Department is reporting five new cases.

Amanda Sweeney says the positivity rate is at least 8.3 percent—with 10.1 percent of tests the health department performs at Tie Breaker Park coming back positive—not a promising sign that we are headed the right direction.

There are 785 cases overall in Christian County—there are currently 52 active cases in the pediatric age group, 131 in the young adult to middle aged grouping, 53 in the older adult category and seven in the elderly age group. There have been 11 COVID-19 related fatalities locally. There are currently five COVID-19 positive patients hospitalized in Jennie Stuart Medical Center. The health department has received state approval to keep the testing site at Tie Breaker open for as long as it’s needed and she urges anyone to go see if they are COVID positive whether they have symptoms or not.

Public Health Director Kayla Bebout says recent upticks in cases have been a combination of clusters and random individuals.

Hopkinsville Fire Department and EMS Captain Michael Pendleton says the department has transported and provided care to 52 coronavirus positive patients and 141 suspected COVID-19 patients—he was glad to report no employees have contracted the virus from their work.

Twenty-six percent of local positive cases have been asymptomatic. The health department encourages residents to continue following mask, social distancing and handwashing guidance to keep themselves and others healthy.
