The local League of Women Voters celebrated 100 years of women’s suffrage Tuesday with a march downtown to the Christian County Justice Center for a brief ceremony.
Museums of Historic Hopkinsville Director Alissa Keller was among those speaking, saying women had a significant and immediate impact on the local and national electorate.
The 19th amendment was ratified on August 18, 1920 and Kentucky was one of the 36 states needed to make it happen. Tennessee was the final state that signed on with a narrow margin in its legislature.
The League also recognized the accomplishments of Mary Bronaugh, a Hopkinsville native who would be Kentucky’s first woman attorney.
