The NCAA’s chief medical officer has said if coronavirus testing nationwide does not improve, a fall sports season can’t be done. Dr. Brian Hainline said on CNN that ”everything would have to line up perfectly” for college sports to be played this fall. The Big Ten and Pac-12 have postponed fall sports, while six leagues – including the ACC, SEC and Big 12 – still plan to play. A number of Big Ten players – including Ohio State star quarterback Justin Fields – still hope to play, posting on Twitter an online petition requesting the Big Ten to reinstate the schedule.

Ole Miss starting center Eli Johnson says he won’t play football this season. Johnson announced on Twitter that he’ll sit out the season and focus on completing his master’s degree in criminal justice in December.The Southeastern Conference allows players to opt out of the season because of COVID-19 and remain on scholarship.

Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is out for the season after tearing the quadriceps tendon in his right leg in the first padded practice of training camp today. The Cowboys added plenty of depth on the defensive line in the offseason, but the loss of a potential starting tackle is a blow for first-year coach Mike McCarthy and the mostly new defensive staff.

The Washington Football Team today hired Jason Wright as team president, making him the first Black person to hold that position in NFL history. At 38, he becomes the NFL’s youngest team president and will run the organization’s business operations with coach Ron Rivera maintaining control over football decisions.

The Canadian Football League has canceled its 2020 season because of the COVID-19pandemic. It marks the first year the Grey Cup won’t be presented since 1919.The nine-team league announced the move Monday, dashing hopes of a shortened season in the hub city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The decision comes after the CFL couldn’t solve a number of issues in an effort to try to salvage a season.
