Two of the Power Five Conferences-the Big 10 and the PAC-12 announced yesterday they are forgoing football and other fall sports due to Covid concerns. The two conferences left the option open to play in the spring.
Meanwhile, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey issued a statement that he is looking to learn more why the Big 10 and PAC-12 are canceling their fall football seasons.
The SEC is proceeding with caution to play. Sankey said on the Dan Patrick Show that it’s unlikely the SEC will play a season on its own if the Big 12 and ACC postpone their fall schedules.
The Big 12 remains inclined to play football this fall, despite the Big Ten and Pac-12 pulling the plug on a 2020 season. Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby has long been an advocate of playing.
The ACC’s decision to play fall sports remains unchanged after the Big 10 and Pac-12 announced their decisions to postpone fall sports. The conference says it feels confident in part because football teams have had little to no coronavirus cases over the past month. The ACC will review the same medical data the Pac-12 used to make its decision this week.
