College Football

The NCAA Board of Governors meet tomorrow and according to a report from The Athletic, could vote to cancel fall sports NCAA sponsored championships. If the vote goes to cancel those events, it could put major pressure on Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) to make a decision about playing football this fall. Sources tell The Athletic FBS commissioners are against the vote right now. The Big 10 and the Pac-12 have already announced conference only football schedules, but no decisions have been made by the SEC, ACC or Big 12 about that or any fall sports for that matter.

West Virginia has parted ways with defensive coordinator Vic Koenning a month after a player alleged the assistant coach made a series of insensitive remarks, including against Hispanics. The school announced Koenning’s departure by mutual agreement, which athletic director Shane Lyons said in a statement today was ”in the best interest of our football program.”

MLB

Reports indicate the Toronto Blue Jays will play the majority of their 2020 home games at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, provided it’s approved by the state of Pennsylvania. The only exceptions will be when they play one series at Yankee Stadium where they will be the home team against the New York Yankees and at Nationals Park when they host the Washington Nationals.

ESPN reports Nashville’s Mookie Betts and the Los Angeles Dodgers are in negotiations for the outfielder to sign a massive long term contract extension. The deal is reported to be for 13 years and more than $380 million according to sources.

Kansas City Royals outfielder Hunter Dozier has tested positive for COVID-19 and been placed on the injured list before the club played its final exhibition game against the Cardinals in St. Louis this evening. Dozier said in a statement he is now following the medical team’s direction by quarantining. He will need to test negative twice before returning to the club.

Golf

The Women’s British Open is keeping its title sponsor and getting a slightly different name. The Royal & Ancient announced today that AIG, a New York-based finance and insurance group, has extended its title sponsorship of the women’s major by two years through 2025. Now that the R&A is charge on running the event, it said its official title will be the AIG Women’s Open. The Women’s Open is scheduled for August 20-23 at Royal Troon and will be the first women’s major held this year.

Auto Racing

The Indianapolis 500 will limit fan attendance, implement strict testing, social distancing and mask requirements, and lift the local broadcast blackout for just the second time in nearly seven decades when the postponed race is run August 23rd at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Speedway officials released a detailed 88-page plan today for conducting the 104th edition of the race in the age of the coronavirus.
