College Basketball

Grand Canyon’s men’s basketball team has been placed in quarantine after four players and two support staff members tested positive for COVID-19. All 14 players and two student managers are in quarantine at a designated on-campus residence hall for the next two weeks. Players began reporting for voluntary individual workouts last week and were placed in quarantine for 72 hours pending results of coronavirus tests and physicals.

NBA

Vince Carter announced his retirement today. Carter played 22 years in the league with several teams, most recently the Atlanta Hawks. The 43-year-old Carter initially announced last year when he signed a one-year deal with the Hawks that 2019-20 would be his final season in the NBA. Carter was an eight time All Star and Rookie of the Year in 1999.

Golf

The USGA is leaning a little more on the world ranking and a lot more on tournament results over the next two months to fill the 144-man field for a U.S. Open that will be without open qualifying for the first time in nearly a century.The exemption categories announced today include a spot for Phil Mickelson. A runner-up six times in the only major Lefty hasn’t won, the most devastating was in 2006 at Winged Foot, just north of New York City, where the U.S. Open is set to return September 17-20.
