A Dawson Springs man was charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer after he allegedly pointed a gun at the head of a local deputy and pulled the trigger Saturday night.
Christian County Sheriff’s Sgt. Brandon Myers was in the area of Eagle Way Bypass and the Pennyrile Parkway and noticed headlights in a fence line and got out to investigate, according to Major Jason Newby.
The four-wheeler was stuck and the operator, 32-year old Brad Dunning of Dawson Springs, gave a story that was suspicious in nature.
Sgt. Myers noticed numbers on the side of the ATV that are similar to city vehicles and was running the VIN number when he looked back up and saw Dunning allegedly pointing a revolver at his head and pulling the trigger.
He heard clicking, but the gun never fired. Maj. Newby says Sgt. Myers pulled his duty weapon, but Dunning then dropped his gun and was arrested.
Dunning was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, burglary, criminal mischief, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and receiving stolen property. Police say Dunning drove a stolen vehicle to Tie Breaker Park and was on an ATV stolen from the city.
Asked why he thinks the gun didn’t fire, Major Newby said “God” was the only answer he has, noting the gun was loaded with five live rounds and it outwardly appeared to be in working order.
