Elkton PD receives grant to hire another SRO for Todd schools

Todd County will have a second school resource officer after the Elkton Police Department received a $125,000 U.S. Department of Justice COPS grant.

Elkton Chief Robert Toombs says his intention will be for the new officer to be mostly at Todd County Middle School and to assist at Todd County Central High School, when needed.

Elkton PD has already hired John “Ed” Higgins for the post and he will begin working June 16 as an officer until the school year begins. Officer Higgins, who has masters and doctorate degrees, currently works as a detective for the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and has prior experience as a school resource officer.

Chief Toombs says all of the details on how Officer Higgins will be utilized will be discussed with new superintendent Mark Thomas.
