Fort Campbell paused Monday and took a solemn moment to remember and celebrate the lives of those service men and women that fell in the line of duty to protect America and its freedoms.
In a Memorial Day service that was aired virtually, Fort Campbell officials laid a wreath and took a long moment of silence in honor of their fallen comrades from all generations and battles. Chaplain Wainwright prayed over the service, the post and those who choose to run into danger and sometimes make that ultimate sacrificing, saying that he hopes no one ever forgets the freedom is not truly free.
Speaking of another prayer uttered by Lt. Colonel Bull Wolverton in 1944 before he and his comrades were set to jump into Normandy on D-Day, Chaplain Wainwright says not many in this world would have shown such courage.
TAPS was played as members of the 101st Airborne Division Air Assault saluted and honored their memories and remembered the families they left behind. Later in the day, the post and surrounding communities took a 101 second long moment of silence and the Brass Band performed a tribute to those who died in service to the nation.
