Hopkinsville man charged with first-degree strangulation

A Hopkinsville man has been charged with strangulation after he allegedly assaulted a woman Friday afternoon.

According to the Hopkinsville police report, 32-year old Christopher Westbrooks of Hopkinsville allegedly assaulted a female victim at a residence on South Jessup Street, leaving visible marks on her person. He then reportedly put his hands around her throat and choked her, restricting her breathing for a short time. When the victim tried to call for help, Westbrooks allegedly took her cellphone and smashed it to prevent her from calling the police.

Westbrooks also reportedly caused damages to a door in the residence. He was arrested and charged with first-degree strangulation, intimidating a participant in the legal process, second-degree criminal mischief and fourth-degree domestic assault.
