Shots fired at officers during multi-county pursuit

A suspect fired gunshots at officers during a pursuit Tuesday afternoon that began in Greenville.

Greenville Police Chief Darren Harvey attempted to make a traffic stop on an SUV driven by 30-year old Connis Denny of Paducah, but Denny did not comply and kept driving, according to a news release.

Denny turned onto US 62 and rammed a police cruiser that pulled into his path in an attempt to bring the pursuit to an end.

Police say Denny swerved into oncoming traffic multiple times and that his passenger, 32-year old Jesse Neal of Central City, opened his door and fired rounds at the pursuing officers. Multiple marks from bullets would later be found on Chief Harvey’s cruiser.

The pursuit continued into Hopkins County, where deputies and KSP used a tire deflation device to bring the pursuit to an end.

Neal allegedly tossed the handgun and 82 grams of methamphetamine out of the vehicle.

Both suspects were arrested and charged with three counts of attempted murder of a police officer, wanton endangerment, fleeing or evading police, trafficking in methamphetamine and other counts.
