Longtime Hopkinsville Middle School teacher and Youth Assembly Advisor Shelley Long is retiring and was honored with a parade of students and friends Wednesday at the school.
Long has been teaching for 22 years and also served 16 years as a KYA advisor along with Kim Batts. The duo has had students elected to all youth assembly positions and local students have earned all possible awards.
The Youth Assembly is a mock state legislature similar to the Kentucky General Assembly where students create mock legislation and lead it through the legislative process.
Long and Batts have had seven students elected Kentucky Youth Assembly governor.
