Gov. Beshear gives Sunday afternoon COVID-19 update

After taking a day off from his daily coronavirus briefings, Governor Andy Beshear was back at the podium Sunday afternoon.

There were a combined 253 new cases of COVID-19 in Kentucky to report between Saturday and Sunday combined—173 on Saturday and 80 on Sunday—though the governor noted the number of new cases will be higher on Monday with comprehensive testing from the Green River Correctional Complex in Muhlenberg County finalized.

There were five new deaths Saturday, including a 79-year old female in Logan County, and no new deaths to report on Sunday. Kentucky now has 5,130 total cases and 253 deaths since the pandemic began. At least 1,892 Kentuckians have recovered.

Asked about a protest that brought out about 1,000 people in Frankfort Saturday, he said he was most disturbed by some of the talk that downplayed the seriousness of the virus.

There have been 795 residents and 320 staff members at long-term care facilities test positive and 132 deaths—over half of Kentucky’s total.

Churches will be allowed to reopen to in-person services on May 20 in Kentucky, but the governor says he’s already heard from some who may take additional time to transition away from the virtual or drive-in service to be sure their members remain safe and healthy.

The governor says expect to hear more about Phase 2 of reopening the health care sector and Phase 1 of reopening the economy in the coming days.

Tennessee now has 13,177 total cases and 210 deaths. Montgomery County has only gained two cases since Friday and is at 148, Robertson County is up to 179 and Stewart County remains at seven cases.
