Some recreational activities that had been restricted due to the pandemic in hard-hit Hopkins County will be allowed again soon as the number of hospitalizations is coming down.
Madisonville Mayor Kevin Cotton says golf, disc golf, and tennis courts will reopen Friday and they will encourage churches to have drive-in church if they want to do it.
Judge-Executive Jack Whitfield is asking churches that do have drive-thru services, which were never directly prohibited, to be sure families stay inside their cars and that items are not passed between vehicles.
Judge Whitfield reminded residents that some churches are struggling financially while not being able to host in-person services and encouraged them to mail in tithes or send them in electronically when possible.
There are 202 total COVID-19 cases in Hopkins County, up seven from Tuesday. Officials noted additional positive cases are expected after recent testing, but Dr. Wayne Lipson of Baptist Health Hospital says the rate of hospitalizations has been on the decline.
Officials say 81 of Hopkins County’s confirmed cases have recovered and there have been 21 fatalities.
