Commissioner Rob Manfred announced Monday that teams can lay off or cut the pay of major and minor league managers, coaches, trainers and full-time scouts beginning May 1. Manfred said he is suspending Uniform Employee Contracts seeing as because of the absence of games caused by the coronavirus pandemic, some revenue streams will be lost or substantially reduced, and clubs will not have sufficient funds to meet their financial obligations.
Meanwhile, players are upset that some teams may take additional pay cuts from their players if games are played without fans. St. Louis Cardinals reliever Andrew Miller, a member of the union’s eight-man executive committee, said the player’s union had already made a deal that outlined economic terms for when the season starts.
