Muhlenberg County prison inmate does from COVID-19

An inmate at the Green River Correctional Complex in Muhlenberg County was one of eight new COVID-19 deaths announced by Governor Andy Beshear during his afternoon briefing Friday.

He says the 49-year old male was about three years away from completing a sentence out of Jefferson County.

Kentucky gained 135 new cases from Thursday to Friday, bringing the overall total to 2,522. There have been 137 deaths since the pandemic began in the commonwealth.

The governor says Kentucky’s plan of action to begin reopening the economy is in line with the president’s and two hurdles to starting phase one is robust testing and 14 days of consistent decline in number of new cases.

The numbers of new cases in recent days have been consistent, but not drastically up or down. Access to a sufficient supply of personal protective equipment is also an issue that’s being worked on.  He’s hoping to see the state opening up in some small ways in early to mid-May.

When some of the economy does reopen, Governor Beshear says Kentuckians will have to be twice as focused on hand-washing and maintaining social distance from others. The White House says those most vulnerable to the virus should continue to shelter during the first phase of reopening.

Tennessee is up to 6,589 confirmed cases and 142 deaths. Montgomery County has risen to 108 cases, Robertson County has 105 and Stewart County has a new case and is at five.
