Adair County nursing home employee becomes first Ky. healthcare worker COVID-19 death

A nursing home employee in Adair County is the first healthcare worker to die from COVID-19 in Kentucky and there are three additional confirmed cases among the staff at Western State Hospital.

Governor Andy Beshear says the 50-year old woman was a med tech at Summit Manor in Adair County.

He says the 139 people associated with Western State tested Monday were staff and three positive tests have been returned, marking 19 staff members who have the virus, in addition to 13 patients.

Education Cabinet Deputy Secretary Josh Benton says about 522,000 people have filed an unemployment claim in Kentucky since March 16. He says they continue to increase the number of employees processing claims and are working to resolve issues that are delaying some claimants from receiving checks.

There have been calls for the governor to outline his plan to reopen Kentucky when that time comes and while he says he will talk about guidelines on how those decisions will be made soon, the ultimate decision will be based on public health.

In some good news, the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels has donated $1 million to the Team Kentucky Fund to assist those severely impacted by the pandemic.

Tennessee has 5,823 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 124 deaths. Montgomery County is at 101 cases, Robertson has 92 and Stewart County remains at four.
