May 15 will be the last day of school for students in Todd County and the board of education has accepted the non-renewal of a sub-lease for the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center.
All school districts in Kentucky have been using non-traditional instruction for about a month due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the state has altered some of the requirements for graduation during the current school year. Acting Superintendent Camille Dillingham says students will still have to have 22 credits completed, but they won’t have to adhere to a couple other requirements that go along with a normal school year.
Director of Pupil Personnel Jennifer Pope told the board that the number of required school hours will be met in time to allow students to finish the year on May 15. No decision has been made yet for a potential commencement ceremony.
As previously reported, Todd Fiscal Court acted Friday morning to not renew the sub-lease the school system has on the tech center and asked for the district to agree without the required 90 day notice. After considerable discussion and numerous questions, Board Attorney Mac Johns said it’s his understanding after meeting with county officials that they still want students to learn in that building—but this should just be a reset to come back to the table after a new superintendent is chosen.
The contracts of both teachers who worked in that building this school year are not being renewed.
A memorandum of understanding with the health department was approved to allow the annex building near the high school to be used as a medical facility if it were to become necessary during this pandemic.
Chief Financial Officer Makka Wheeler announced it would be her final meeting after 16 years of service, saying the last 18 months have been physically and emotionally taxing on her.
The board met online via Zoom to continue social distancing efforts.
Pope says the district has served over 10,000 meals to students while the school system has been closed, making sure no one had to go hungry because of the unusual circumstances.
