One of golf’s more colorful characters has died. Doug Sanders, a 20-time winner on the PGA Tour, passed Sunday morning in Houston, at age 86. He was still an amateur when he won his first Tour event in 1956 at the Canadian Open in a playoff. His best year was 1961 when he won five times and finished third on the money list.
He finished runner up four times in the majors, including the 1970 British Open. He missed a four-foot putt for par to win and lost to Jack Nicklaus in a playoff the next day.
