Hopkins County continues to see an increasing number of its residents test positive for COVID-19, but its leaders are pleased with the public’s compliance with social distancing guidance over the weekend.
Madisonville Mayor Kevin Cotton noted during a Monday morning briefing that Hopkins County has led the state with fastest growth of new cases—a distinction he has no desire to maintain.
There are 62 confirmed cases in Hopkins County, but Judge-Executive Jack Whitfield says don’t get hung up on the numbers as there are many more people quarantining at home who likely have the virus.
Four Hopkins County residents have died from COVID-19.
Governor Andy Beshear issued an order last month ceasing all evictions during the pandemic, but Mayor Cotton reminds renters that the rent will still accrue and cause problems when things return to normal if it’s not paid.
They also noted that Kentucky has suspended sales of out-of-state hunting licenses, meaning many who would come to the area to turkey hunt later this month won’t be able to do so legally.
