Two more western Ky. COVID-19 deaths, virus widespread in Hopkins County

There have been two additional COVID-19 related deaths in western Kentucky and the Hopkins County Health Department says the outbreak there is ‘widespread.’

Simpson County Judge-Executive Mason Barnes announced the first confirmed patient there has died and Hopkins County Public Health Director Denise Beach says an adult with other pre-existing conditions has died. That makes two COVID-19 related deaths in Hopkins County since the pandemic began and at least 10 across Kentucky.

Beach says 17 people have tested positive in Hopkins County and called their outbreak ‘widespread.’

She says the virus is spreading quickly in Hopkins County and all patients are self-isolating.

With over 100 known direct contacts of coronavirus patients in Hopkins County, Beach says the patients are now notifying those they have been in contact with when possible.

She says area residents should be less concerned with numbers of people tested and positive cases at this point and instead focus on their own hand washing and social distancing efforts.

Madisonville Mayor Kevin Cotton says the city is shutting down the city golf course due to COVID-19 concerns.
