Gov. Beshear gives Saturday afternoon update

There have now been three deaths in Kentucky associated with COVID-19 and the number of cases continues to rise—though not as quickly as in many other states.

Governor Andy Beshear says a 67-year old Anderson County man who also had other underlying health conditions has died after testing positive for coronavirus. There are now 87 confirmed cases statewide, with six of the 24 new ones in the Green River District Health Department that includes Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, Webster and Union counties.

He announced that small businesses in Kentucky can now apply for disaster loan funding through the Small Business Association.

The governor reiterated his order that churches not hold in-person services Sunday morning, instead encouraging them to hold online meetings and asking them to ring their church bells at 10 a.m. eastern time, 9 a.m. locally.

Asked about how his administration is getting the messages about COVID-19 to the Amish and Mennonite communities, Beshear says he’s hoping local health departments and residents who speak with members of those communities will help.

As always, he stressed the importance of social distancing, good hygiene and frequent handwashing as the best ways to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

South of the state line, Tennessee is reporting 371 cases of COVID-19, with 140 of those in Nashville-Davidson County.
