Gov. gives Thursday afternoon update

There has been a second COVID-19 death in Kentucky and Governor Andy Beshear has closed all in-person social gatherings, including places of worship.

Multiple labs processing tests makes it more difficult to pin down the exact number, but the governor believes there are at least 47 cases of coronavirus in the commonwealth, including a six-year old child in Jefferson County. Daviess and Henderson counties have recorded their first cases.

The second death is a 64-year old male from Jefferson County, who died March 13 and who also had other underlying health conditions.

Governor Beshear ordered that all social gatherings where people come together be closed, including churches. He says it’s a decision he didn’t come to easily, but he believes it necessary to curb the spread of coronavirus.

He urged churches to stream services online and encouraged those that are supporting kids and seniors during this tough time to keep up their good work.

He says no one is going to be in communities arresting people for meeting in churches, but he hopes they will do the right thing.

The governor says he’s disappointed by the General Assembly’s decision to remain in session and that he was disappointed with cuts to Medicaid included in the Senate version of the budget.
