The United States Golf Association announced Tuesday restructuring for qualifying for the US Open and US Women’s Open. Local-or first stage-qualifying in its current form has been canceled. The USGA has said it will now look to redesign the qualifying process going forward as events unfold. The U.S. Women’s Open is scheduled June 4th-7th in Houston. The U.S. Open is June 18th-21st at Winged Foot in New York.
Defending US Open champion Gary Woodland tells Golfweek golf is very much on the back burner due to Covid-19. He adds he wouldn’t be surprised if events past the PGA Championship that was postponed yesterday, would also be postponed.
After announcing the postponement of The Masters last Friday, Augusta National Golf Club has shut down according to multiple reports. Golf Digest.com indicates Augusta National historically closes a few weeks after the Masters ends, with the club opening up again for play in the fall.
Though no new date was specified during the announcement of the postponement, should the Masters be played in 2020, October to November would theoretically provide a window to conduct the tournament.
Golfweek.com reports the Ryder Cup will go on as scheduled in September as of right now. A report yesterday indicated the event between the US and Europe would be moved back to 2021, but the PGA of America said in a Tweet to the Ryder Cup account the event would go on at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin September 25th- 27th.
