The need for blood donations remains high in the face of COVID-19, and the Western Kentucky Regional Blood Center is asking people to give if they can.
Robin Shively with the blood center says people are understandably concerned, but the center on South Virginia Street is taking all the precautions they can to follow CDC guidelines while still getting the vital stores of blood that’s needed.
She says things are changing quickly, so give them a call at 270-684-9296 to make sure of their hours, but currently the center is open Monday through Thursday for donations.
Shivley says if you are sick or feel sick, stay home—that hasn’t changed since before coronavirus reared its head. But if you’re feeling well and are able, donate blood so those who depend on it, including cancer patients or those who are badly injured, can have it.
Donors must be at least 17 years old—16 year olds can give with parental permission—weigh at least 115 pounds and wait 56 days between donations.
Medications must be checked with staff before donating. All donors must show a photo ID and are advised to eat well before and after giving.
