College Basketball

Chicago State’s men’s basketball team will not play at Seattle University today or Utah Valley on Saturday due to concerns about the coronavirus. Meanwhile, the Chicago State women’s team is scheduled to host Seattle and Utah Valley this week, but is declining to play.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City was scheduled to visit Seattle on Saturday, but has already stated it will not travel to the game. All schools involved compete in the Western Athletic Conference, which is scheduled to host its men’s conference tournament beginning next Wednesday in Las Vegas. WAC officials stated today that all other conference events will go on as scheduled.

MLB

Right-hander Collin McHugh agreed today to a $600,000, one-year contract with the pitching-needy Boston Red Sox, a deal that allows him earn up to $4.25 million.

Boston ace Chris Sale will start the season on the injured list. He was slowed by pneumonia, then felt elbow pain Sunday after he threw batting practice for the first time at spring training. The 32-year-old McHugh can earn $3 million in performance bonuses and $650,000 in roster bonuses. His base salary is guaranteed.

Golf

Defending champion Franceso Molinari withdrew before the start of play today at the PGA Tour’s Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. Reports indicate Molinari is out due to a back injury. Molinari was scheduled to play with Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose.

Augusta National Golf Club issued a statement Wednesday saying they were monitoring the current coronavirus outbreak and stated the 2020 Masters, as well as the Augusta National Women’s Amateur and Drive and Chip and Putt National Finals, are planned to go ahead as scheduled. The Masters takes place April 9-12.
