The Modernette’s Civic Club hosted its annual African American Heritage Breakfast at the James E. Bruce Convention Center and heard a message about justice and mercy.
Over 400 attendees filled the space in celebration of heritage, history and fellowship. The keynote speaker was Kentucky Court of Appeals Chief Judge Denise Clayton, who told the crowd of her connection to Hopkinsville through her family. She says her experience with the criminal justice system has taught her that while justice is important, most people are looking for fairness and mercy.
She encouraged the crowd to always fight for the rights of others, even if it sometimes seems you are fighting alone.
Quoting former First Lady Michelle Obama, Judge Clayton says if we can learn to celebrate what we have in common, the world will become a better place.
The money raised from the breakfast goes back into the community by providing scholarships to help local youth further their education and achieve their future goals. In the club’s 55 year history, they have provided over 100 scholarships, along with supporting numerous local agencies.
